Creating and managing Segment Groups
In this guide, we’ll explain how to set up and manage Segments, along with how to segment your visitors based on 1st/3rd party data, on-site behavior, and/or survey data.
Creating Segments in RightMessage
RightMessage offers two distinct ways to segment your visitors:
- Questions: Allow visitors to self-select their segments through surveys (like "What industry are you in?" or "What's your role?")
- Segment Groups: Automatically categorize visitors based on their behavior, data, or attributes (like "Website Activity" or "Geographic Location")
Segmenting with Questions
On the left hand side click on Questions then the +New button in the upper right hand corner:
We have a number of options that you can use to get started:
Most of the time you'll be using the "Multiple choice question" option:
Add your question, the possible answers and whether you want to sync them with your ESP/CRM (don't forget, you have to integrate your ESP/CRM before you can sync!), then hit Create Question and you have your segments!
Any changes you make in RightMessage – including changes to how segmentation is defined – won’t actually go live on your website until you click “Publish to your website”.
For more information on how this all works, check out our section on publishing.
Segmenting with Segment Groups
Segment Groups allow you to combine multiple segments using logical conditions. Here's how to create one:
- Click "Segment Groups" in the left sidebar and click the Add + button
- Name your Segment Group (e.g., "Business Type x Email Platform")
- Build your conditions using set theory:
- Choose a condition type (e.g., "All of the following are true")
- Select segments from existing groups (e.g., "ESP" includes "Klaviyo")
- Add multiple conditions using "include any of" to create combinations
- Use + Inner condition or + Condition group for more complex logic
For example, you can create a segment group that identifies visitors who use both Klaviyo AND are in the Ecommerce business type.
Remember to publish your changes for them to take effect on your website.
Deleting a Segment Group
To delete a Segment Group, simply click the Delete button in the upper right hand corner:
