Thank You Page Setup Guide

Overview

When someone subscribes to your email list, you need a dedicated page on your website where they land after submitting their email. This is called a "thank you page" (or "confirmation page" for double opt-in).

Think of it like this: When a visitor gives you their email, they're redirected somewhere. This "somewhere" needs to be a proper page on your website, not just a popup message or an external page from your email service.

Why? Because RightMessage needs to embed a survey on this page to collect important information about your subscribers. This survey won't work properly if it's not on your own website domain.

For example:

✅ Good: yourwebsite.com/thank-you

❌ Bad: convertkit.com/confirmed

❌ Bad: Popup message saying "Thanks for subscribing!"

Requirements

1. Must Be On Your Domain

Think of domains like postal addresses. Your thank you page must live at your website's address.

✅ Good examples:

  • yourwebsite.com/thanks
  • yourwebsite.com/welcome
  • yourwebsite.com/confirmed

❌ Bad examples:

  • mailchimp.com/forms/success
  • convertkit.com/confirmed
  • aweber.com/thankyou

Why? RightMessage's survey needs to talk to your website directly. It's like having a conversation - both parties need to be in the same room.

2. Must Be A Real Page

Your thank you page needs to be an actual webpage people can visit, not just a temporary message.

✅ Good:

  • A dedicated webpage with its own URL

❌ Bad:

  • Popup messages
  • Modal windows
  • Toast notifications
  • Form success messages

Think of it like this: If you can't copy the URL and send it to someone, it's not a proper thank you page.

3. Direct URL Access

Your thank you page should have a clear, permanent web address.

✅ Good URLs:

  • yourwebsite.com/thank-you
  • yourwebsite.com/welcome
  • yourwebsite.com/confirmed

❌ Bad setups:

  • Pages that only work after form submission
  • Temporary URLs with random numbers
  • Pages that expire after viewing

4. No External Services

Don't use thank you pages provided by:

  • Email service providers (ConvertKit, MailChimp, etc.)
  • Form builders (TypeForm, Gravity Forms, etc.)
  • Landing page tools (LeadPages, ClickFunnels, etc.)

Why? These external services prevent RightMessage from properly embedding your segmentation survey.

5. Technical Requirements

Your thank you page must:

  • Load fully in the browser
  • Allow JavaScript to run
  • Not redirect to other domains
  • Stay accessible throughout the subscription process

Understanding Single vs Double Opt-in Flows

What's The Difference?

Think of it like a two different ways to join a club:

  • Single Opt-in: Like walking in and getting immediate access
  • Double Opt-in: Like applying and waiting for approval email

Single Opt-in Flow Explained

This is the simpler flow. Here's what happens:

  1. Visitor enters their email on your site
  2. They are immediately redirected to your thank you page
    • Must be on your domain (e.g., yoursite.com/thank-you)
    • This is where our survey will appear
  3. They complete the survey
  4. They are redirected to your chosen destination (like a download or welcome page)

Example Setup:

Subscribe form → yoursite.com/thank-you → Survey → Final destination

Double Opt-in Flow Explained

This is more complex but more secure. Here's the sequence:

  1. Visitor enters their email on your site
  2. They see a "Check your email" message
  3. They receive a confirmation email
  4. They click the confirmation link
    • ⚠️ This link MUST lead to your website (e.g., yoursite.com/welcome)
    • ❌ NOT to your email provider's confirmation page
  5. They land on your confirmation page where our survey appears
  6. After the survey, they are redirected to your chosen destination

Example Setup:

Subscribe form → "Check email" message → Confirmation email → yoursite.com/welcome → Survey → Final destination

Common Double Opt-in Mistakes

❌ Using ESP's confirmation page

❌ No dedicated confirmation page

❌ External confirmation pages

❌ Redirect loops

Best Practices

For Single Opt-in:

  • Use clear URL: yoursite.com/thank-you
  • Keep the page simple
  • Include only the survey
  • Add brief welcome message

For Double Opt-in:

  • Use clear URL: yoursite.com/welcome
  • Configure ESP to use your confirmation page
  • Test confirmation flow thoroughly
  • Include reassuring copy about email confirmation
